The section below on noise cancelling is worth two minutes - it is the specification most often misread in this category.

Noise cancelling, and the thing the box does not tell you

There are two completely different noise-cancelling features and they are routinely confused, including on packaging.

ANC - active noise cancellation - is what you hear. It cancels ambient sound so the music is clearer and the aircraft engine recedes. This is the feature people mean.

ENC - environmental noise cancellation - is what the person on the other end of a call hears. It cleans up the microphone signal so your voice comes through over wind and traffic. It does nothing at all for what you hear.

A pair advertised with '4-mic ENC' may have no playback noise cancellation whatsoever. If you want the aircraft to go quiet, look for ANC specifically. Every listing we write separates the two.

What the price buys

Under OMR 15 you get working Bluetooth earbuds with decent battery life and, on some models, basic ANC. Sound quality at this level is about fit as much as drivers - a bad seal loses more bass than a cheaper driver does.

Between roughly OMR 25 and OMR 60 the ANC becomes genuinely effective, the microphones get better, and multipoint pairing - connecting to a phone and a laptop at once - starts to appear. This is the band where most people should buy.

Above OMR 60 you are paying for the top ANC implementations, better codecs and better call quality. The gap between OMR 60 and OMR 90 is real but much smaller than the gap between OMR 10 and OMR 40.

Open-ear, clip-on and in-ear

In-ear buds seal the canal. They give the best isolation and the most bass, and some people find them uncomfortable after an hour.

Open-ear and clip-on designs - the Huawei FreeClip and the HONOR CHOICE Earbuds Clip are the examples here - sit outside the ear canal. You hear your surroundings, which is safer on a road and more comfortable for long wear, and you lose isolation and bass. They are a genuinely different product, not a worse one.

If you cycle or run outdoors on Omani roads, the open design is the safer choice.

Battery figures and how to read them

Manufacturers quote two numbers: playback from the buds alone, and total playback including the charging case. '8 hours / 36 hours' means eight in the ear and thirty-six with case recharges.

ANC reduces the first number, often by a quarter or more, and the quoted figure is usually measured with it off. Read the footnote on the product page.

The case is also a consumable - it is a battery, and after a few years it holds less. Buds are not a ten-year purchase.

Pairing with iPhone and Android

Every pair here works with both platforms over standard Bluetooth. What differs is the companion app and the extra features it unlocks.

Samsung's newer Galaxy Buds support Bluetooth with iPhone but not the Galaxy Buds iOS app, so some settings are unreachable from an iPhone. Apple's AirPods pair instantly with an iPhone and work as ordinary Bluetooth earbuds on Android. Huawei and Anker publish apps for both platforms.

If you switch between a phone and a laptop all day, look for multipoint rather than for a brand match.
