What tablets cost in Oman, tier by tier

Under OMR 40 you are in kids' tablet territory - Blackview and G-Tab models built around a case, parental controls and a screen that survives being dropped. They are not fast, and they are not meant to be. Judge them on durability and on the parental software, not on the chip.

Between roughly OMR 40 and OMR 90 sits the general-purpose tablet: a big screen for YouTube, browsing, reading and school work. Lenovo Tab M9, HONOR Pad X7, Samsung Galaxy Tab A11, Xiaomi Redmi Pad 2 and Huawei MatePad SE live here. RAM is what separates them in daily use more than the processor name.

From about OMR 100 to OMR 250 you get sharper, faster screens, better speakers and, on several models, pen support. This is where the paper-textured displays appear - HONOR's Papermatte and Huawei's PaperMatte - which are genuinely different to write on.

Above OMR 250 you are buying a laptop substitute: Samsung Galaxy Tab S10+ and Tab S11 Ultra, Huawei MatePad Pro, Xiaomi Pad 8 Pro. Keyboard and pen are what make these worth the money, so budget for them.

Matte screens - who they are actually for

Several tablets here ship with an etched, paper-like display: the HONOR Pad Papermatte models, the Huawei MatePad PaperMatte range. The texture adds friction under a stylus, so writing and sketching feel closer to paper, and it cuts reflections under bright light - which in Oman is not a small thing.

The trade-off is that the same etching slightly softens fine text and mutes colour saturation. If you mostly watch films, a glossy screen looks better. If you take notes by hand or draw, the matte one is worth choosing deliberately.

Wi-Fi or cellular?

A cellular tablet costs more and needs its own data line. Most people do not need one: tethering from your phone covers occasional use, and tablets spend most of their life on Wi-Fi at home.

Cellular earns its place if the tablet travels with you for work, if it is for a child who needs to be reachable, or if it is replacing a laptop on the road. Check the listing carefully - the Wi-Fi and cellular versions of the same tablet look identical in a product photograph and the difference is only in the model code.

Huawei tablets and Google apps

Huawei MatePad tablets run HarmonyOS without Google Mobile Services, so there is no Google Play Store. Huawei's AppGallery is the alternative and covers a lot, but if your child's school uses Google Classroom, or your work runs on Google Workspace apps, check before you buy rather than after.

We state this on every Huawei listing. It is not a reason to avoid them - the hardware is strong and the PaperMatte screens are among the best here - but it has to be a decision you made on purpose.

Buying a tablet for a child

Two honest points. A kids' tablet is slower than an adult tablet at the same price, because the money went into the case and the software. And the parental controls are only as good as the setup: spend the first twenty minutes configuring them rather than handing the tablet over unconfigured.

If the child is old enough to want the tablet for games, look at the RAM figure. 2GB will frustrate them within a year.
