How much should a phone cost in Oman right now?

The floor for a usable new Android phone in Oman sits just above OMR 30. At that end you are buying a 4G device with an entry-level chip, 4GB of RAM and a 720p-class screen - fine for calls, WhatsApp, maps and a camera in your pocket, slow if you keep twenty tabs open or play anything demanding.

The step that actually changes daily use is the one around OMR 70 to OMR 110. That is where 5G, 8GB of RAM, 128GB or 256GB of storage and a 120Hz screen become normal. If you keep a phone for three or four years, this band is where the money is best spent - the cheaper tier ages out faster because of RAM and update support, not because the screen breaks.

Above roughly OMR 250 you are paying for camera hardware, build materials and, at the top, folding screens. The jump from OMR 250 to OMR 700 buys a better telephoto lens, better video, faster silicon and a form factor - not a phone that makes calls any better. Is 5G worth paying for in Oman?

Yes, in most of the country. Oman has three networks - Omantel, Ooredoo and Vodafone Oman. Omantel launched 5G in February 2021, Ooredoo in April 2021, and Vodafone Oman entered the market in March 2022. 5G reached about 91% of the population across roughly 5,893 sites by the end of 2024, and all three operators now publish coverage above 90%, so 5G is no longer a Muscat-only feature.

Speed does vary by operator. In Q4 2025 Omantel and Ooredoo both posted median 5G download speeds above 320 Mbps, while Vodafone Oman's narrower spectrum holding returned 87.9 Mbps. If you are choosing a network as well as a phone, that gap is worth knowing about before you commit to a contract.

The practical advice: if the price difference between the 4G and 5G version of a phone is under about OMR 10, take the 5G one, because it is also usually the newer chip with better update support. If the gap is OMR 25 or more and you mostly use Wi-Fi at home and at work, the 4G model is not the compromise it sounds like.

Dual SIM, eSIM and what actually works here

Almost every Android phone on this page takes two physical SIMs, which is the reason most people in Oman buy one - a local line and a home-country line in the same handset. Check the listing for your model, because a few flagships trade the second SIM slot for an eSIM.

Omantel offers eSIM on both Baqati and Hayyak lines and Ooredoo offers it on its Oman plans, so an eSIM-only or dual-SIM-plus-eSIM phone is usable here. An eSIM-only phone is workable in Oman, but if you travel to a country where you buy a physical prepaid SIM on arrival, keep at least one physical slot.

One thing to check before you buy: a phone bought abroad may be locked to a foreign carrier. Everything Playphone sells is unlocked and sold for use on any Omani network.

Huawei phones and Google services

Huawei devices run HarmonyOS and do not ship with Google Mobile Services, so there is no Google Play Store, no Gmail app and no Google Maps from the store. Huawei's AppGallery and Petal Maps cover a lot of ground, and most banking apps used in Oman are on it, but this is a real difference and not a detail to discover after delivery.

Paying with your phone in Oman

Apple Pay works in Oman with Ahli Bank, American Express, Bank Dhofar, Bank Muscat, Bank Nizwa, Meethaq, National Bank of Oman, Oman Arab Bank, OMpay and Sohar International. That list is wide enough that most iPhone owners in Oman can pay by phone at a card terminal.

On Android the picture is narrower. Google Wallet tap-to-pay in Oman is currently limited to Ahlibank, Sohar International and Sohar Islamic. Samsung Wallet's payment feature is not listed for Oman either. So if tap-to-pay from the handset matters to you and you do not bank with one of those three, that is a genuine point in the iPhone's favour right now - worth saying plainly rather than leaving you to find out at the till.

Heat, battery and the Omani summer

Ambient temperature is the part of a phone's spec sheet that nobody prints. Sustained heat is what degrades a lithium battery fastest, and a phone left on a car dashboard in Muscat in July will lose capacity faster than the same phone in a cooler climate.

Two practical consequences. First, a larger battery is worth more here than the mAh number suggests, because you charge less often and shallow charge cycles are kinder to the cell. Second, fast charging generates heat: if your phone supports 120W but you are charging overnight anyway, use a slower charger and the battery will last longer.

Battery wear from normal use is not a warranty fault under Playphone's warranty policy, or under any manufacturer's. Treating the battery well is the only lever you have.
