It fits two iPads and no others

The Magic Keyboard for iPad Pro 13-inch (M4, M5) fits the 13-inch iPad Pro with the M4 or M5 chip. The 11-inch version fits the 11-inch iPad Pro with the M4 or M5 chip.

Neither fits an iPad Air, a standard iPad or an iPad mini, and neither fits an older iPad Pro. The dimensions look close enough in photographs that people assume otherwise, and the magnetic connector placement is what decides it.

What it turns the iPad into

A floating screen, a backlit keyboard with proper travel, and a trackpad - which is the part that changes how iPadOS feels. Cursor support on iPad is good, and a trackpad makes text editing and file handling far less tedious than tapping.

It also passes power through, so the iPad charges from the keyboard's port and the iPad's own port stays free.

The weight is the honest caveat: iPad plus Magic Keyboard is close to a light laptop. If portability was the reason you chose an iPad, hold one before you commit.

Alternatives worth considering

If you type occasionally rather than daily, a cheaper folio keyboard or a Bluetooth keyboard you use at a desk will do the job for a fraction of the cost.

The Magic Keyboard earns its price if the iPad is genuinely replacing a laptop for you and you type on it every day. It is a lot of money for occasional use.
