Why a last-generation iPhone is usually the better buy

Apple supports iPhones with software updates for far longer than the model year suggests. A phone from two or three generations back is still getting iOS updates, still runs every app in the store, and still takes photographs that most people cannot distinguish from the newest model in ordinary light.

What you give up is specific and worth naming: the newest camera sensor and its computational processing, the current chip's headroom for on-device features, and one or two generations of battery health. What you get is a materially lower price for a phone that will serve for years.

The one caution is buying too far back. Every generation you go down shortens the remaining update window. Two or three generations is the value sweet spot; six is a phone approaching the end of its supported life.

Which of these to pick

Among the earlier generations here, iPhone 16 Pro Max is the most capable - a dedicated telephoto camera, the larger battery, the brighter screen. If the camera is why you are buying an iPhone and you do not want to pay current-generation prices, this is where the money goes. Note that some iPhone 17 Pro Max configurations are also listed on this page and sit above it.

iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus differ from each other only in screen and battery size. The Plus is for people who want more screen and longer endurance and do not care about the telephoto lens.

iPhone 15 brought USB-C, which matters more than it sounds: one cable for the phone, the iPad and most modern accessories. iPhone 14 and iPhone 13 still use Lightning, so factor in that you will be carrying a second cable.

New, not refurbished - and why that distinction matters

A refurbished iPhone has been used, returned, repaired and resold. It may be perfectly good, but its battery has cycles on it, its parts may not all be original, and its warranty comes from whoever refurbished it.

Battery, charging and the cables you will need

An iPhone 13 or 14 uses a Lightning cable; an iPhone 15 or 16 uses USB-C. Neither ships with a power adapter. If you are moving from an older iPhone, your old plug will work; your old cable may not.
