Pencil Pro or Pencil (USB-C)

Apple Pencil Pro is the fuller stylus: pressure and tilt sensitivity, a squeeze gesture to change tools, haptic feedback, and Find My so you can locate it when it rolls off a desk. It charges and pairs magnetically on the side of a supported iPad.

Apple Pencil (USB-C) is the simpler one. It does tilt but not pressure, has no squeeze gesture and no Find My, and it charges over a USB-C cable. It attaches magnetically for storage but does not charge that way.

For note-taking and marking up documents, the USB-C Pencil is enough. For drawing and painting, pressure sensitivity is the whole point and the Pro is the one to buy.

Neither choice matters if your iPad does not support the one you want - check first.

Check your iPad before you order

Apple Pencil support is decided by the iPad model and generation, not by the price you paid. Two iPads that look identical can support different Pencils.

Find your model in Settings, then General, then About. Send it to us and we will confirm. This takes a minute and prevents the most common returned accessory in the iPad range.

Using a Pencil with a matte screen

If you write a lot by hand, a paper-textured screen changes the experience considerably - the friction makes the stylus behave more like a pen and less like a stick on glass.

Apple does not sell a matte iPad, but several Android tablets we stock do have etched displays, and screen protectors with a paper texture are widely available for iPad. Worth knowing if handwriting is the reason you are buying a Pencil.
