Why buy wired earphones in 2026

Three reasons, and they are all practical. There is no battery to charge and none to wear out, so a pair of EarPods works identically in five years' time. There is no pairing, so they work the moment they are plugged in, on any device with the right port. And there is no latency, which matters if you are editing video or playing anything rhythm-based.

Cheaper wireless earbuds exist - several pairs here start under OMR 7 - but EarPods are Apple's own wired pair, so the in-line controls and the microphone behave exactly as an iPhone expects, with nothing to pair and nothing to charge. They are the pair you keep in a bag for when the wireless ones are flat.

USB-C or Lightning

iPhone 15 and later and current iPads use USB-C. iPhone 14 and earlier use Lightning.

The two versions are otherwise the same earphone. If you have devices of both kinds in the house, buy the one matching the device you use most - an adapter between the two is another thing to lose.

What they are not

EarPods have an open fit and no noise cancellation. On an aircraft or a busy street you will turn the volume up to compete with the surroundings, which is both unsatisfying and bad for your hearing.
