Which adapter for which device

The 40W adapter charges the Pro iPhones and iPads faster and delivers more when the device asks for it. If you charge an iPad as well as a phone, it is the more useful of the two.

Neither will damage a device that draws less - a phone takes what it is designed to take and no more.

USB-C or Lightning - check your device

iPhone 15 and later, and current iPads, use USB-C. iPhone 14 and earlier use Lightning. Apple Watch has its own magnetic charger that is not either.

Apple Pencil: two of them, and they are not interchangeable

Apple Pencil Pro and Apple Pencil (USB-C) support different iPads, and buying the wrong one is the most common mis-order on iPad accessories.

Apple Pencil Pro adds pressure sensitivity refinements, squeeze gestures and Find My; the USB-C Pencil is the simpler, cheaper stylus. Which one your iPad supports is decided by the iPad, not by your preference.

Why buy Apple's own accessories

Counterfeit Apple cables and adapters are common in this market and the risk is not abstract: a poorly made charger has no proper isolation between mains voltage and the device, and cheap cables have caused port damage.
