Which AirPods to buy

AirPods 4 have an open fit - they rest in the ear rather than sealing the canal. Some people much prefer that, because it is comfortable for hours and you stay aware of your surroundings. Others get no bass from it and find they work loose.

AirPods 4 with Active Noise Cancellation are the same open shape with ANC added. That combination is unusual and works better than it sounds, though an open fit cannot cancel as much as a sealed one.

AirPods Pro seal the ear canal with a silicone tip. Among the in-ear models that gives the strongest noise cancellation and the most bass, plus a transparency mode for when you want to hear around you. For flights and open-plan offices this is the one.

AirPods Max are over-ear headphones rather than earbuds - a different product at a different price, for listening at a desk rather than on the move.

Open fit or sealed - try before you commit

This is the decision that determines whether you like your AirPods, and it is not about sound quality. Ear shapes differ enough that the open AirPods fit some people perfectly and fall out of others' ears within minutes.

Using AirPods with an Android phone

They work. AirPods pair over standard Bluetooth with any phone and play audio normally.

What you lose is the Apple-specific behaviour: instant pairing, automatic switching between your iPhone and iPad, Find My, and firmware updates, which come through an Apple device. If you carry an Android phone, there are better-value earbuds on /products?c=Buds.

Batteries, and what happens after a few years

The batteries in the buds and the case are not user-replaceable and they lose capacity with age like any lithium cell. Three or four years of daily use is a realistic working life before playback time noticeably shortens.

Normal battery wear is not a warranty fault under Playphone's warranty policy or Apple's. Keeping the case out of a hot car helps more than anything else you can do.
