Chargers: how many watts do you actually need?

The number on a charger is its maximum, not what your device will draw. A phone that accepts 25W will draw 25W from a 25W charger and 25W from a 100W charger - the extra capacity does nothing except let you charge something else at the same time.

For a phone, 20W to 30W covers nearly everything. For a tablet, 45W. For a laptop over USB-C, 65W and up. The multi-port chargers here are worth the small premium if you charge a phone and earbuds from one plug.

Car chargers are the same logic with one addition: a car's USB port typically delivers 5W, which will not keep up with navigation running. A proper car charger from the 12V socket will.

Cables are not interchangeable, and the difference is not visible

Two USB-C cables that look identical can differ by a factor of ten in what they carry. A cable rated for 60W will not charge a laptop that wants 100W, and a charge-only cable will not transfer data at all.

Three things decide whether a cable suits you: the connectors on each end, the wattage it is rated for, and the length. A 3ft cable is right for a desk; a 6ft cable is right for a bed or a sofa. Buying the wrong length is the most common small regret in this category.

Braided cables cost a little more and last considerably longer. The failure point on a cable is almost always where it meets the connector, and braiding plus a moulded strain relief is what stops it.

Audio, speakers and headphones

Over-ear headphones here sit at the affordable end - they are for long listening at a desk or on a commute rather than for critical listening. The noise-cancelling models cut steady sound like an air conditioner or engine noise well; they do less about voices.

Bluetooth speakers are judged by battery life and by how they sound at the volume you actually use. A small speaker pushed to maximum distorts; the same speaker at three-quarters is often the better listen.
